The Division of Medical Oncology comprises a group of 15 medical oncologists, one clinician scientist/clinical scholar and one clinical associate, all working to provide care to patients with malignant disease. Our physicians are committed to offering state-of-the-art medical treatment in a compassionate and caring setting. Three of our members are based in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and run their clinics from the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. One of our members, Dr. R. Julia Petrie is based at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, N.S. They also offer a satellite clinic in Antigonish on a weekly basis. As well, satellite clinics are held in Yarmouth and New Glasgow and these are attended by the Halifax physicians. By traveling to these smaller communities our division members are able to relieve some patients of the financial and physical stresses of traveling to Halifax or Sydney.

The division participates in clinical trials and studies enabling patients to benefit from the most current advances in the management of oncological disease. Research plays an important role in our division members' commitment to improving treatment and outcomes for our patients.

Division members are committed to providing postgraduate and undergraduate education. Our subspecialty residency training program offers trainees an opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in treating patients with a broad range of malignant diseases. Students from various undergraduate and postgraduate programs rotate through our division and are provided with a wide variety of experience in a busy clinical setting.

Continuing Medical Education is another aspect of our division's commitment to providing medical education for physicians, allied healthcare workers and the public. Our physicians offer their time to participate as presenters in various information sessions. They also continue their own learning processes as they attend National and International educational meetings.

The Division of Medical Oncology works closely with Cancer Care Nova Scotia to provide the residents of Nova Scotia with current and factual information concerning cancer, its causes and treatments.
